Functions: Graphing Functions Practice MCQ

Question Statement:

Transform the following parabola y = ( x 6 ) 2 + 5

Move 5 units to the left.

Move 1 unit down.

y = ( x 1 ) 2 + 4
y = ( x ) 6 + 9
y = ( x + 6 ) 2 5
y = ( x 11 ) 2 + 9
y = ( x + 11 ) 2 9

Explanation:

Correct Answer: A

To move unit down, subtract from Y (or from the entire equation) , so subtract 1.

To move unit to the left, add to X (don't forget, that since you are squaring X, you must square the addition as well).

With the move down our equation y = ( x 6 ) 2 + 5 becomes y = ( x 6 ) 2 + 5 1 = ( x 6 ) 2 + 4

Now to move it to the left we get y = ( x 6 + 5 ) 2 + 4 = ( x 1 ) 2 + 4
