Canberra, Australia is the birthplace of O'Loughlin. His father is a teacher and his mother is a nurse. In 1999, he studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) then graduated in June 2002.

Personal life

O'Loughlin's had become the father of a son in 1997.The boy born from his girlfriend Holly Valance. They separated in February 2009. He then married Malia Jones on 18 April 2014. They have a son named Lion O'Loughlin.
