GMAT: What is a Decimal Place Value
0625 as a Percentage Steps How to

In this lesson, we will go over each step in converting the decimal 0.625 to a percentage. We will do this by first setting up 0.625 as a fraction then multiplying it to get 100 in the denominator.

0625 as a Percentage Steps How to

1 0.625

Steps to Solve the Problem

You just started your brand new business and are making money fast! Your friend looks through your numbers and tells you that you are making 0.625 cents for every dollar you sell. Those are high margins! You want to know what this is in a percentage so you can go brag to your family.

The word percentage means a number expressed as part of 100. This means that we want to find what number would be in the numerator, top of the fraction if 100 is in the denominator, bottom of the fraction.

In order to do this, we need to start by writing our decimal as a fraction. The easy way to do this is by putting 0.625 in the numerator and putting 1 in the denominator.

1 0.625 The reason we can do this is because anything divided by 1 is equal to itself. For example, 6 is equal to 6 / 1 as a fraction because 6 divided by 1 equals 6. As stated earlier, we want the denominator to be equal to 100. In order to achieve this, we can multiply the denominator by 100. But, what we do to the denominator, we must also do to the numerator. Thus, we will multiply the fraction by 100 / 100. We can do this because 100 divided by 100 is equal to 1. We can multiply anything by 1 and it will be equal to itself! 0.625 1 x 100 100

When multiplying fractions, we must multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the numerator of the second fraction. We will do the same with the denominators.

Numerator:

0.625 x 100 = 62.5 Denominator: 1 x 100 = 100

This will give us:

62.5 100

Now we have a number over 100, which is basically the definition of percentage. This means our final percentage is the numerator!

Solution

0.625 is equal to 62.5%. This mean you make a 62.5% profit on everything your new business sells!

Checking Your Work and Shortcuts

The simple way to convert 0.625 to a percentage is by multiplying it by 100. This will give you the 62.5%, and you are done. You can see why this shortcut works by looking at the math for the numerator. When finding the percentage, all we want is the numerator as long as 100 is in the denominator.

Another easy way to change a decimal to a percent is to move the decimal place to the right twice. When you move the decimal place once, you will get 6.25. When you move it twice, you get 62.5. Then throw on the percent symbol, and you have your answer! To check that our answer is correct, we can work backward to see if we get our original decimal. So instead of multiplying by 100, we will divide our answer by 100. When we divide 62.5% by 100, we get 0.625. This mean that we did our work correctly!
