With flying fish as one of the national symbols of the island, it's no surprise that Barbados is known as 'the land of the flying fish' and that it is one half of the country's national dish.
There are 23 public secondary schools, seven government-assisted private secondary schools in the country. Students are required to remain in school until the age of 16 when they sit the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) examination. Passing the CXS is the equivalent of the GCE – O levels.
Saint Michael Government-funded nursery and primary school children benefit from a low-cost school meals program that was first established in 1930 to combat reduced nutrition rates when children were provided with milk and two biscuits. A hot meals program was introduced to primary schools in 1963, which continues to this day.
