Most of us are unable to jot down the collection of our ideas. So, in English essay one of the effective way to erite your ideas is following sentence structure.

The Four Types of Sentences

Sentence have four main types. Each is described below

A. Simple sentences:

A sentence that contains one independent clause is called Simple sentences. Independent clause is identified by counting the no. of subject and verb in the sentence.

For example:

'I do push-ups and walk yesterday’

In the above sentence there is only one subject but the verbs are two.

'I and Adam went to the barber'

Here, we have two subjects, yet just one verb.

Both of these sentences would be simple sentences.

B. Compound sentence:

A sentence that has two independent clauses that are joined by coordinate conjunction is called compound sentence.

For example:

I went to the barber and Adam went to the park.'

There are two subjects and verbs: I and Adam, and went to the barber and went to the park respectively.

The two clauses are linked using a conjunction - and.

C. Complex sentence:

A sentence that contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses that are joined by subordinating conjunctions is called complex sentence .

For example:

'Robins left the study because he failed.'

The independent clause is Robins left the study. The subordinating conjunction gives us the reason he left the study - because he failed.

D. Compound-complex sentence:

A sentence that has two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.

For example:

'Robins left the study because he failed, and then Adam started study when he heard about Robins failure.'

In this sentence, we have two independent clauses with Robins and Adam being the nouns, and left the study(for Robins) and started study(for Adam) being the verbs. The dependent clauses are because he failed and when he heard about Robins failure’.

Choosing a Sentence Structure

  • So how will you determine the use of these types of sentences in your essay. Here are some easy ways:
  • For introducing new idea, concept or character use simple sentence structure.
  • For repeating the already discussed concept, compound or complex sentence is the best.
  • When at the same instant you want to engage your reader in the consideration of multiple characters, ideas, or theories, your preference must be using a compound-complex.
