How to Write a Thesis Statement

The Thesis Explained

By now you might have learnt that what is thesis statement. So, move next and see what does strong thesis do?

  • It respond a query with a evidence that is being proved.
  • It represents the reader about the whole discussion of essay
  • It is particular

So, let’s discuss their application in different cases.

When You're Given an Essay Prompt

In case when you are being given a prompt that demands your agreement or disagreement, you must do little brainstorming whether you are agree or not.

For example:

If prompt is like this:

‘Failure is not fatal.' - Form an essay by explaining that are you agree or disagree with the given statement using examples from your interpretation, experiences, or observances.

So, first make your decision that are you agree with the statement or not. Suppose you are agree. Now, try to build thesis.

Defeat and failure is not deadly as it teaches one with a deep lesson.

This thesis shows that writer thinks that failure is necessary for learning. However, there may be question raised that ‘How does it teach lesson?’ . The reader can expect an essay about failure. We'll discuss how to revise this thesis later on.

When You're Not Given an Essay Prompt

We will follow the same way of building thesis as discussed above even if not provided with essay prompt. However, only difference here is that we have to respond for both the question and self build thesis.

Consider that you are asked to discuss the meaning of the story of Theseus and the Minotaur in an essay. So, for this first you need to explore information about the said topic. Then, we need to build some convincing argument.

You may think that Theseus is a sign of revolution, and like a maze in navigating politics. Whereas the Minotaur is a monster that serves all governments. After considering these you would develop a thesis as:

Theseus and the Minotaur story is a metaphor for revolution. Where the Theseus, the Minotaur, and the maze are demonstrating the characters in social uplifting.

So, in building this thesis writer is taking three things as symbol and relating it with the social upheaval and revolution.

Revising Your Thesis

Except the timed thesis, where limited time is give to think, organize and write essay, all other times give the opportunity of revising thesis. Why we need to revise it. It is because one could not necessarily be able to write the correct thesis at ones.

So, following questions help you in revising thesis:

  1. Whether I have use an argument to which my reader may disagree? Keep in mind, using many arguments in thesis may confuse reader.
  2. Whether I have build a thesis that would not enclose in the given space? So, concise it.
  3. Whether this thesis serve the topic? If you wish to move with it you may have to justify it more deeply.

Let’s work on previous thesis to judge whether we make it better or not.

Defeat and failure is not deadly as it teaches one with a deep lesson.

It is building a certain argument that failure is an important part of learning.

Let’s try to make it more particular.

John Shepherd, President Obama and the great philosophers are agreed on one point that:

They think that failure is too necessary to have great position- so everyone must taste it in life.

By building it with evidences, this thesis has become more effective and suitable to develop understanding for readers.
