What is Apa Format? - Style Definition

APA Style Defined

Different kinds of style preferences are:

  • formatting
  • punctuation choices
  • structure of papers
  • spacing requests
  • word use

These are often demanded by your teachers each in a remote manner.

So what is APA format ? It is one of the writing formats that is being used in today’s writing. APA style is commonly taught in educational places.

The Basics of APA Style

APA has defined its writing style not only at its websites but also in several books. Some basics of it are:

General Structure: The title page of APA -style publication complied of abstract, the main body, references, footnotes, graphics, then appendices. So, title page is numbered as 1. The title is written in center of page. The next lines are followed by name, school or organization name with respect to every next line. Then, you could give some extra information like author note. Running head is included at the top of title page.

Running Head: The smallest part of the title page which is followed by every next page of paper is running head. It is placed at the top left corner of each page and should have less than 50 spaces. Label “Running head” must be written on title page. For instance: you would write as ‘Running head: Difference between the virus and anti-virus’ for the page title that is 'An Analytic Look at the Differences Between Difference virus and anti-virus’

Abstract: The second page of paper is abstract page. This word (abstract) is places in the middle below running head. After that put down the summary of about 150 to 250 words without paragraph indentation. It will describe your essential points of research and paper including hypothesis, methodology, and possible conclusions. Main Body Structure: The third page begins with the main body. You must write by leaving the one-inch margin through the four sides of page. Your body structure must be as:

  • The left-side margin should be flush.
  • Page numbers should appear at the top right.
  • Type in a 12-pt. type with a common font, such as Times New Roman.
  • Every part of your paper should be double-spaced.
  • The full title of your paper should appear again at the beginning of the main body.

References: After the main body of the work references come immediately.

Footnotes: Interpretation or explanation is frames under footnotes, so you should write the head ‘Footnotes’ in the middle top of next page. Each footnote is numbered on each line.

Graphics: The tables, figures, and appendices are presented on the next page sequentially and served as the supporting material. The page is also labeled with ‘Graphics’ at the top center.

Citation and References

In order to make the idea and research more logical APA style uses citation

(acknowledgment), so to let the readers assured that where this comes from. These are used as the reference or the evidence for the argument you have made. The format for citation usage is as:

  • Write the author's last name
  • The year of the publication
  • and the page number of the information of your commendation

These are separated by commas and are enclosed in parenthesis where as the ‘p’ of page no. must be lowercase.

The above format may be changed in different cases as:

When you will write the author's name in your text, you only have to include the year of publication and the page number. Or when the one thing or work is presented by several author or the author is unknown.

The reference list is the second component of this system. It is a brief statement that presents all the publications that you mentioned in your paper. Its format is:

  • It begins a new page after your main body
  • Word 'References' is titled at the top of the page
  • This list represents author's last name in alphabetical order
  • Each reference is shown at new line
  • These lines are arranged in dangling indentations

References consist of the last name and first name of author separated by a comma. After this the year of the publication is put in parenthesis. Then the title is being written which doesn’t include any kind of special punctuation.

Next, the title of the work is written without any or type except a period at the end. The title which is listed in italics, followed by a comma, and the page numbers is appeared next. The format varies for different kinds of data.

Section Headings

APA style requires the headings if the paper break down into different sections and sub-sections. Headings are categories in 5 different level where each pointed by different tools of formatting like bold, italics, indentations, and capitalization font.

There classification is as follows:

  • Heading 1 is centered. Moreover, it is bold and uses both uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Heading 2 is aligned left. It is bold too, and uses both uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Heading 3 is indented. It is bold, however, uses only lowercase letters after the first one, and ends in a period. Your regular paragraph starts right after the heading, and not on a separate line
  • Heading 4: Indented, bold, in italics, uses only lowercase letters after the first one, and ends in a period. Your regular paragraph starts right after the heading, and not on a separate line
  • Heading 5 is Indented and in italics. It uses only lowercase letters after the first one, and ends in a point. Your regular paragraph starts right after the heading and not on a separate line.
